Drakes hyfr- what the song means…

This song is actually about a woman whom he truly loves but it becomes complicated because of his work obligations and lifestyle. He tries to compensate love with temporary elations but loses the girl…Check it out…

  1. Drake – HYFR

    [Drake]
All my exes live in Texas like I’m George Strait
Or they go to Georgia State where-
Tuition is handled by some random nigga that live in Atlanta
That she only see when she feels obligated

In the first verse, he tells us that he has an interest for beautiful woman. He compares himself to the infamous George Strait who is well known for having many beautiful woman fans. Georgia State also known for their beautiful smart woman.

He then introduces us to a woman. Who goes to Georgia State and has daddy issues. “Tuition is handled by some random nigga that live in Atlanta That she only see when she feels obligated”

Admitted it to me the first time we dated
But she was no angel, and we never waited
I took her for sushi, she wanted to fuck
So we took it to go, told them don’t even plate it

We know he likes this woman deeply because, firstly- he remembers the first date that he took her on (and what she said). Secondly, he says “she admitted to me” as if they had chemistry and hot conversation. Then he tells us why he liked her “But she was no angel, and we never waited, I took her for sushi, she wanted to fuck, So we took it to go, told them don’t even plate it”. The latter of that quote tells us how keen he was to have her.

And we never talk too much after I blew up
Just only ‘hello’ or ‘happy belated’

This gives insite to them not seeing eachother often. However, he says “only ‘hello’ or ‘happy belated'”, meaning they do talk but he isnt satisfied with the small talk in comparison to the awesome conversation they had on the date…

And I think I text her and told her I made it
And that’s when she text me and told me she prayed it
And that’s when I text her and told her I love it
And right after texting, told her I’m faded

He informs her that “he made it”. Reiterating that he likes her because he feels the need to tell her ALSO he text her first and when she replies with “..she prayed it” indicates its mutual. Then he acts on a whim and tells her that he loves her, to which he quickly fixes by saying he is high (faded).

    She asked
What have I learned since getting richer

Knowing that this particular woman is smart, he lets us know that she penetrates his mind with introspective questions. Planting seeds, she makes him interview himself and seek the truth. She stimulates his mind to which he answers…
I learned working with the negatives could make for better pictures
I learned Hennessy and enemies is one hell of a mixture
Even though it’s fucked up, girl, I’m still fucking wit ya

“Even though it’s fucked up, girl, I’m still fucking wit ya”. Having sex with someone you like is intimate and stimulating. Meaning, eventhough he has moved on to success and its crazy lifestyle, he still finds her mind stimulating, penetrating…like sex.

    Damn, is it the fall
Time for me to revisit the past
    It’s women to call
There’s albums to drop, there’s liquor involved
There’s stories to tell, we been through it all

And because of this realization he feels a little emo like “fall time (autumn)” when its cold, dark and mood dampening. So to forget about this woman, “It’s women to call, There’s albums to drop, there’s liquor involved, There’s stories to tell, we been through it all”. To keep his mind occupied.
    Interviews are like confessions
Get the fuck up out my dressing room, confusing me with questions
    Like:

    Bridge: Lil Wayne]
    Do you love this shit?
    Are you high right now?
    Do you ever get nervous?
    Are you single?
I heard you fucked your girl, is it true?
You getting money? You think them niggas you with is wit’ you?
    And I say

“interviews” here has double meaning 1) introspection 2) literal interviews, of which both sums up that it vuccums for the truth. “Get the fuck up out my dressing room, confusing me with questions
Like:Do you love this shit? Are you high right now?Do you ever get nervous? Are you single?I heard you fucked your girl, is it true? You getting money? You think them niggas you with is wit’ you?And I say”, refering to the focus he has. This life he has was a dream he chased and now has it so he doesnt want to be confused with introspections that allows him to question his new found life style. Although he has the luxury of money, women and parties, it is never stable. He wont have the luxury of having a normal life ie marriage, kids etc. So he avoids these “interviews” so as to avoid introspection and questions that makes him doubt or dislike his lifestyle.

    (And I say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Fuckin’ right, all right
    (And we say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Fuckin’ right, all right

He then quickly eradicates these introspective questions that causes doubt by being cocky and optimistic. “hell yeah, hell yeah”

    [Lil Wayne]
    So much for being optimistic
They say love is in the air, so I
Hold my breath until my face turn purple
Keep a few bad bitches in my circle
My nuts hang like ain’t no curfew
Bitch if you wave, then I will surf you

Then lil Wayne adds his advice “So much for being optimistic, They say love is in the air, so I, Hold my breath until my face turn purple, Keep a few bad bitches in my circle, My nuts hang like ain’t no curfew, Bitch if you wave, then I will surf you”. He worked too hard to get where he is and would much rather substitute temporary happiness (ie “bad bitches” instead of real love) just to get by.
I flew jet, she flew commercial
But we still met, later that night

After my session, she came over
I was aggressive, and she was sober
    I gave her pills
She started confessing and started undressing

“I flew jet, she flew commercial, But we still met, later that night” This shows how different their lives are but how they end up together anyway. “I was aggressive, and she was sober, I gave her pills, She started confessing and started undressing”, Gives us insight about the life he know leads. That the ladies in his life has to be able to keep up with him. Also, it shows how they fit each other where as she penetrates his mind to “interview” himself with inttrospection and he allows for her to “confess” to him

And ask me to hold her
And so I did, but that was last month

Again, iterates how much he likes her coz eventhough he doesnt want to be caught up in love yet he cuddles with her without any hesitation. Then quickly fixes that whim by avoiding her for a month like he avoids introspective questions ie “get the fuck out my bedroom confusing me with questions”. As if she reminds him of what he could have.

And now she’s texting me, asking for closure
    Damn

She decided she needs to move on…

She say this shit gon’ catch up to me
    I keep tissue paper
We eat each other whenever we at the dinner table

Again she gives him something to think about. He responds with the same way he avoids itrospection that causes doubt over his lifestyle. Tissue paper is also used to wrap fragile glass etc.

She say she hate that she love me
And she wish I was average
Shit, sometimes I wish the same
And I wish she wasn’t married

In previous versus, she threatens to move on which he plays off. However in this verse, she admits that she loves him but his lifestyle doesnt allow for it. He wished that he could be with her and even shows a little selfishness when he says that he wished she wasnt married. This doesnt neccesarily mean that she was having an affair but it could mean that she acted on her threat and really moved on to marry someone who is average.
Promises, I hope I never break ‘em
Met a female dragon, had a fire conversation but
    Interviews are like confessions
Get the fuck up out my bedroom confusing me with questions like

In this verse, we get an introduction to a new woman of interest and that she too, like the other woman, shares fire conversations with him. We also get the feeling he was forced to let go of the previous woman because she got married. He reflects and imagines himself when he does marry and hopes that when it does happen, he is truly settled and doesnt break the promise (vows). Then we get the insight that this woman (like the previous) gives him introspetive questions and it feels like its a continues viscious cycle which doesnt allow for him to love.

    [Bridge]
    Do you love this shit?
    Are you high right now?
    Do you ever get nervous?
    Are you single?
I heard you fucked your girl, is it true?
You getting money? You think them niggas you with is wit’ you?

    [Hook]
    (And I say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Fuckin right, all right
    (And we say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Damn right, all right

    [Drake]
    (And we say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Fuckin’ right, all right
    (And we say) Hell yeah
    Hell yeah, hell yeah
    Fuckin’ right
    Damn right, all right
    Aw Yeah
